Interesting Diet

I was checking out this new diet I came across on the twitter feed. It’s an interesting article. The diet basically takes us back to our human ancestors in the hunter gatherer years. Before the advent of agriculture technology that enabled our ancestors to give us our processed food legacy.

I want to find a way to incorporate this kind of diet with my lifestyle. I do not think I can completely mirror it. I have to watch my potassium levels as well as make sure it does not conflict with my medical conditions. Otherwise it sounds like an excellent way to provide nutrition.

Hiatus

It’s been about a month since the last post, and about equally as long since I have given some serious time to my fitness goals. Life has given me some tough lessons in recent days and I hope I have come out of it with a better understanding of where I want to go.

In reviewing my goals from the last post, the ambitiousness of it gave me a renewed sense of direction on what I am supposed to do on a daily basis.

The GOOD NEWS is I have not completely reverted to my bad eating habbits and I still have a regular cardio a few times a week. The BAD NEWS is I have not progressed in my weight loss and muscle building goals as far as I would have liked. In fact, I gained a few pounds in 30 days. I was 212 on June 1st and now on July 12, after a month and 12 days I gained 6 lbs.

Its a phase we all go through, and I have done it several times in the last few years. The best thing to do when you recongize it is to accept it and move on from it. With that being said, I will be updating this page regularly again and hope to provide an ongoing journal of my progress.

The question is not IF I will reach my goals, it is WHEN.

Goal Setting

Sometimes it’s good to periodically review the goals you have set and set new ones. To this point I have just been interested in losing weight. I came from an unbelievable 287 lbs nearly 5 years ago and through all the fad diets and workout programs, I have never been able to maintain a consistent rate of weight loss until this year.

At New Years, eve I was celebrating the coming of what is turning out to be a great year so far. I was 245 lbs around that time.

New Years Eve 2009

Now almost 6 months later, I have lost about 33 lbs and I did it in a way that makes me feel good. I experimented with vegetarianism, I tried different diets and eating patterns— I even started going back to the gym.

Now as half the year has gone, I still have a lot of work to do. According to this website my ideal weight range is around 182-200 lbs. I know I still have some work to do but it is actually quite exciting that I only have about 12 lbs to go to get to that weight class. I did that in 11 days with the Fatloss-4-Idiots diet. I know that diet cant be maintained forever, but i appreciate the help its done for me.

So I am setting some goals which I hope I can come back to this blog and update on frequently.

Diet - I want to experiment with different kinds of diets. In the next 2 months, I will be trying another e-diet and also will experiment with the diet that comes with p90x

Exercise - I live about 30 minutes to the beach if I walk, 5 minutes if I drive. I want to make it a goal to go to the beach at least every other day for the rest of the time I am here. I find that a brisk walk helps my heart get warmed up for a workout. On the way back from the beach, I can stop by the gym which is about 2 blocks from the house. I want to make it a goal to include every major muscle group in my workouts and start documenting the progress through this blog.

Weight Loss & Gain - I know that with workouts, comes the gaining of muscle. This will also be a contributor to the loss of fat. So as I progress with this next stage of the journey, simple weigh-ins won’t be the only measure of progress. I will start measuring my waist, neck, arms, & legs to start to get an understanding of what my progress is.

June 1, 2009

Weight - 212
Waist - 37
Neck - 19
Arms - 15
Legs - 24

September 1, 2009

Weight - 192
I was going to make goals for the other measurements, however I dont want to speculate. Maybe after a month, I can revisit this and put a better estimate.

Bottom line… in the next 3 months, I am gonna lose more weight, and gain a little muscle but the net loss will be about 20 lbs.

Wish me luck!

An Excerpt from “Games Slim People Play”

Psychologist Frank Laverty in 1977 said this,

“A cure is possible only if you accept that you are totally responsible for your feelings and actions. Others cannot make you feel good or bad nor can they make you behave in any particular way. You and you alone make the decision. We are influenced by others, but the final decision is ours.
Many obese people avoid accepting responsitbility for their condition by transferring or projecting the responsibility to other people.”

Here are the “Games” that Laverty said they play:

-I’m overweight because Jean cooks rich food.
-I eat dessert to please sally.
-I wouldn’t eat chocolates if Jack didn’t buy them for me.
-I eat seconds because Paul hates to waste food
-I have a couple of drinks before dinner because Tom doesn’t enjoy drinking alone

Then he comments,

“People who take full responsibility for their feelings and behavior are able to say “no” to excess food without feeling guilty or sorry. This does not mean that a person will not have bad feelings; it means only that he makes the final decision about what, when, and how long to feel bad… Refusing to accept responisbility is a learned part of an overweight persons mindset. You alone are responsible for your excess weight.”

Calorie Shifting - What is it really?

Calorie Shifting has become a buzz word of debate in some circles of the weight loss industry. But what is Calorie Shifting and how does it work?

Calorie Shifting was developed as a counter-strategy of what I call “Low Something Diets”. You know what I mean: every where you turn is another low this and low that diet. Once it’s a low fat diet, another time it’s low carb or even NO carb. There are diets which proclaim that they hold the solution to your weight problems because they are low calorie diets. You get the picture. Low Low Low.

For a while, some of these diets would seem to be effective. People would report early fat loss at a good rate. It was what happened a few weeks or months down the line that was troubling: those same people who lost weight in the beginning, ended up gaining it all back plus more. It didn’t happen to all of them, but the statistics state that 95% of diets fail and people end up fatter than they started.

Wondering why this happened? The reason is simple: when you deprive your body of a certain food group like carbs or drastically cut down on the amount of calories you eat, your metabolism slows down. You see, your metabolism thinks you’re starving, as if you were in the wild nature, and in order to make sure that your energy deposits last as long as possible, it will adjust and slow down. It’s a protective mechanism which is biologically active in all of us.

The challenge was to create a system in which your metabolism will remain running high but in which you’ll still lose fat fast. That’s how Calorie Shifting came to be. Calorie Shifting is a way in which you constantly rotate your food thereby tricking your metabolism so it remains running high and burning a lot of fat.

Calorie Shifting works by getting you to eat the right food at specific times of the day and then by roatating it so your metabolism never gets used to any routine. The good thing is that because your metabolism keeps on running high, you don’t have to deperive your body of any food groups or eat an absurdly low amount of calories. Because your metabolism is high all the time, you don’t gain all the weight back the moment you stop being on a diet.

It may be a little difficult to get yourself to carry out the Calorie Shifting method by yourself because you need to create an expert menu which is based on this system. Fatloss 4 Idiots is the one resource that I know of, in which I was able to read more about this technique, and what types of foods could be incorporated to utilize calorie shifting. Fortunately, they take a lot of the guesswork out of it when they included the “Diet Generator” along with the Fatloss 4 Idiots E-Book. For any of you intending to give this program a shot, I highly advise using the Diet Generator, for the first 11 days. Get excited, and follow through. You’ll be ecstatic to see it working, just like I did. From then on, you can ease up and do the “maintenance” version of the diet, which can include many of the foods you’re already eating right now. Thats what I personally love about this program.

So in short- Low this, Low that, is a thing of the past, and not the best way to go in terms of boosting your metabolism and burning FAT

Thanks 4 the supportive E-mails & tweets !

So I finished the 11 Day Diet challenge and I took a few days break. So now its Wednesday, four days later and I am starting again. I took a little longer than I should have, but I still observed the rules, I ate what I wanted, but i never got full, and I always ate every 4 hours. I am starting my second round today, however I am going to go for a little longer than 11 days, its April 1st, but this is no April Fools Joke, I will go on a second round diet till April 18. I want to see if i can lose another 10 lbs by the time I get to Coachella. I think i can do it. I am going to use the same rules as in the eBook, however I wont be using the diet generator. I want to have some more flexibility with my food because I also want to give myself more energy for the workouts that I plan on doing. So here we go again. I will be uploading the weigh-in vid sometime soon and I am going to be keeping track of my work out stats online. Hopefully that will keep me motivated. Thanks for all the responses and emails, it really helps keep me inspired. Drop me a line if you are going through your own workout or diet plans. I love hearing from you. Thanks!
